«Сумасшедший, как шляпник», сумасшедший, спятивший. Фраза as mad as a hatter стала популярной благодаря Льюису Кэрроллу и его книге «Алиса в Стране чудес» (1865 г.). Однако это выражение можно было встретить ранее в произведении У. М. Теккерея 'Pendennis' (1850 г.), а ещё раньше, в 1836 г., оно появилось в Америке. Mercurous nitrate (ртутная соль), которая использовалась в производстве фетровых шляп, была вредной для здоровья и являлась причиной такой болезни, как пляска св. Витта, которая и послужила, по-видимому, основанием для возникновения этой фразы. Было предположение, что первым «сумасшедшим шляпником» был Роберт Кребб, эксцентричный человек, живший в XVII в., который раздал своё добро бедным и спал на щавелевых листьях или траве. Говорят, что прототипом персонажа Льюиса Кэрролла был Теофилус Картер, продавец мебели, известный как the Mad Hatter, во-первых, потому что носил цилиндр, во-вторых, из-за своих эксцентричных идей.
